Where Did Ancient Supernatural Beliefs First Come From?

I’m writing a story about supernatural beliefs and I need some background info that I can use.

  • The Golden Bough by James Frazer is the best resource for this topic.
    Essentially it comes down to survival. Ancient peoples were dependent on an environment they did not understand to feed themselves. The sun needed to shine and the rain needed to fall in order to eat. The unknown causes of rain and the Sun’s movement along with their importance were the beginnings of supernatural beliefs and religion.

  • Supernatural beliefs evolve from the ancient people
    that didn’t know any better and were scared of everything
    unknown to them. They spread their stories about things
    that they saw and created stories to account for the
    happenings. Most of the things that happened could be
    explained through science but there wasn’t any scientific
    knowledge back then. Ever play the game ‘Telephone’
    and what was said at the beginning wasn’t what was heard
    at the end? People just naturally love to embellish stories
    and I believe that is how the supernatural stuff was created.

  • One belief I think I can explain is the belief in ghosts. When a loved one leaves this world we want so badly for it not to have occurred. In this desire for the dead to not be dead we tend to see, hear, or feel things that we associated with that person. Even if those things had no relevance in our relationship with our dearly departed. All emotions can be misunderstood. Grief might be at the top of that list though.

  • ancient religions came from:
    1) the revelation of God, for the old Jewish faith;
    2) Demons and Satan’s deceit (any other gods than God are demons)
    the ancient Jews and the ancient wizards could make supernatural things like turning a stone into a frog

  • lemme ask you a question . if you saw a huge peel of lighning strike above you head and you had never had any education watsoever except how to pick berries n **** . wouldnt you think it was something divine?
