Ghost Rider is based on a Marvel Comic. I don't think it has any real fact in it.

Based on a comic is correct.
I don't know any real life connections to this fictional character.

The marvel comic came out years ago (late 1960s?) and I recall reading the first issues.
It was set in the old west. The hero had no powers, just his six guns and white powder that made his outfit and his horse glow.

Well, im not sure that this is actually where it came from, but there is an urban myth about a guy on a motorcycle:
A man was riding behind a big truck loaded with sheet metal. On a large turn, one of the sheets slid off, decapitating the man on the motorcycle. However, the motorcycle kept on running up the highway, the man in the truck saw it, and he thought that it was a ghost. After all, it had no head. The trucker had a heart attack and skidded off the road.
